Some people feel that fairy tales have little relevance in today's world, and young students can have a hard time identifying with the "princess" heroines. In order to better engage your students in the fun of Disney's Sleeping Beauty KIDS, you might consider casting against the physical "types" you find in storybooks and cartoons. After all, real kids are now bringing the story to life! For example, Princess Aurora does not need to be played by the prettiest blond girl in your class. Thinking carefully about Aurora's important attributes (intelligence, independence, kindness,
reliability, bravery) will open up your casting to more girls. This same approach can be used to cast your Prince Phillip with an actor who can portray steadiness, humor, bravery and gentleness. The three Fairies do not need to be chubby old ladies; rather focus on their spunk, magical powers and
quick thinking when casting. Maleficent is an evil and "ugly" character, but look for an actress who is willing to find the intellect, humor and dark beauty inside this famous villain. As you can see, personality is far more important than physical appearance in bringing these characters to life. Although times have changed (very few of us live in castles!), the themes of Sleeping Beauty KIDS –
dreams, love, loyalty – are timeless. By casting these fairytale characters in fresh ways, you can make your production more relevant to your student body while still enjoying the pure fun of telling this beloved story! |
